184.5 miles

Jason and his buddy Carson recently completed a long-awaited 3-day bike trip from DC to Cumberland, Maryland.  The path was the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which runs 184.5 miles from Georgetown to Cumberland.  You read more about biking the path by clicking here.

Leaving Georgetown, still smiling
Packing it all on the bikes
Jason's trusty steed

The Canal is controlled by a series of locks, which allowed boats to navigate the change in elevation.  Here is lock 33 at our destination for the first night, Harper's Ferry, West Virginia.

One of the main streets in Harper's Ferry.  Don't let the nice weather fool you; the day before we rode 20 miles in the mud and rain.

Raccoon on the path.  We also saw deer, rabbits, turtles, cranes, snakes, and various other critters.

Day 2 at the 100 mile marker.  More than halfway there.
The National Park Service maintains the tow path, including hand pumps with fresh water every five miles or so.
Night 2 was at the Trail Inn in Hancock, Maryland.

Probably the best beer I have ever tasted at Pizza Hut.
Day 3 brought us through the nearly mile long Paw Paw tunnel.

You need a flashlight in here.
The last half mile.
Jason and Carson arrive in Cumberland
Celebrating with the family
Note that the trail now continues another 150 miles on to Pittsburgh.  Maybe next time...
