Tico Tales - Feliz Dia Mama!

Occasional Tales from our Life in Costa Rica

Today is Mother's Day in Costa Rica, and it's one of the most important holidays of the year. Stores have been displaying chocolates, jewelry, and lots of shiny household appliances for weeks. It's not unlike what happens in the U.S. every May, but the Ticos have taken it a step further. Dia del Madre is a national holiday, and government offices, schools, and banks will be closed Monday. Of course, if they really wanted to do moms a favor, they'd keep the schools open! Just kidding. And yes, Father's Day is observed here, too, but it's not a national holiday and not a really big deal. Anyway, today Sophie's school had a lovely celebration for all the moms. Sophie recited a short poem in Spanish along with her classmates. All Amy caught was "regalo," "todo," and "corazon," but we think Sophie loves Amy with all her heart. After the poem, all the classes were invited outside for sandwiches, cookies, and drinks served by the teachers. Then the kids played together before presenting their moms with handmade gifts. It was really fun to see Sophie with her new school friends. And seeing all the kids allowed Amy to determine once and for all that Sophie really is the only girl in the whole school who doesn't have pierced ears.

Happy Mother's Day Amy, how fun to get to do Moms day twice. Hope you had fun.
It's great to see pictures of Sophie in school clothes, and playing with her friends. She looks like she is having fun.
I laughed when I read about the pierced ears, I know about that all to well.
    Lots of love,
