Austria 2006 - Vienna (May 23 - June 14)

Before our stop at the World Cup, Amy and Sophie spent two weeks in Austria with Grandma. Here are some pictures from Vienna.

Grandma and Sophie at the Schonbrunn Palace, summer residence of the Hapsburgs. It's painted yellow, Empress Maria Theresa's favorite color.

This is the Gloriette at Schonnbrun Palace, built in the late 16th century as an anti-war memorial. Maria Theresa used it as a breakfast room.

This lovely church is on the grounds of the palace and was attended through the years by members of the imperial family.

The palace grounds even feature the world's oldest zoo, opened in 1752 as entertainment and education for the royal court. It's the only zoo in the world to feature baroque architecture. Sophie enjoyed her first visit to a zoo.

Here's Grandma and Sophie in front of the Karlskirche (Charles Church). It was dedicated in 1713 to the Milanese bishop Charles Borromeo after a plague epidemic spared Vienna.
