Tbilisi Tales - Batumi (July 14-16)
Occasional Tales from our Life in the Republic of Georgia
From July 14-16 Jason was in Batumi, Georgia to do some work with the Ministry of Finance of Adjara. Adjara is a region of Georgia along the Black Sea coast. Batumi, the capital of Adjara, is only 10 miles from the Turkish border. It's a popular summer holiday destination for Georgians (and many Armenians) looking to escape the heat of the city.
It was a serious road trip -- 10 hours roundtrip -- but it was worth it. The conference went well (click here to see US Embassy website) and Jason was invited to attend the Miss Georgia 2006 pageant that was being held in Batumi over the weekend!

Jason's fellow road warriors: Gia, Marika, and Merab. Batumi is a five hour drive from Tbilisi.

Making traditional Georgian bread at a rest stop on the road between Tbilisi and Batumi.

Tunnel constructed in Soviet times to connect east and west Georgia.

A cloudy day in the port of Batumi.

Restaurant on the Batumi waterfront.

Monument in the Batumi promenade, a large park along the beachfront.

Jason in the town of Sarpi at the Georgia-Turkey border. You can see a mosque on the coast just across the border in Turkey.

Jason touches the Black Sea for the first time.

After the conference it was time for a "supra", which is a Georgian feast involving enormous quantities of food and even more wine.
