Tico Tales - Poás Volcano (December 17)
Occasional Tales from our Life in Costa Rica
Over the weekend we took our first trip into the Costa Rican countryside. We visted Poás Volcano, which is just 90 minutes from downtown San Jose. The volcano is still active and we saw steam and hot sulphur rising from the crater - although the air temperature at the top of the volcano was quite chilly.

Jason and Sophie bundled up at the crater lookout point
After looking into the crater we took a short hike to one of the lakes at the top of the volcano.

But, the best part of the trip was the beautiful drive into the mountains leading into Poás Volcano National Park.

We passed coffee plantations, cows munching miles of green grass, rural towns, and roadside fruit and vegetable markets.

The hills are alive....with the smell of coffee
On the way home we stopped at a coffee shop covered in flowers near the village of Poasito. Amy and Sophie even got to share their snack with one of the locals.

It's time to mow the roof again
