Tico Tales - Iron Chef Costa Rica
Occasional Tales from our Life in Costa Rica
Jason's Spanish teacher Yami came to our house one recent Saturday to teach us how to cook some traditional Costa Rican dishes like homemade corn tortillas and picadillos de chayote. Sophie loved helping make the tortillas and was a wizard with the tortilla press. The best part of all was sitting together to enjoy a great meal out back under the mango tree. Amy was even able to successfully recreate picadillos de zucchini on her own a week later, proving Yami a fine teacher.

Yami showed up with her apron, tortilla press, herbs from her garden, and other ingredients. She also brought her own thermos of coffee because Jason told her he wasn't sure we had a coffee maker, which she found very strange. She also thought it was very bizarre that we do not have a rice steamer. (But who wants to ship a rice steamer halfway around the world every two years? Hey, at least we have plates!)

Gracias, Yami!
