Tico Tales - Chocolate Eggs and Bunny Ears
Occasional Tales from our Life in Costa Rica
It was interesting to realize that, unlike Christmas and Mother's Day, Easter is not a commercial holiday in Costa Rica. We saw very few chocolate eggs and bunnies, and the ones we did notice were at an expat-friendly grocery store, imported from the U.S. and very expensive. There were no store displays of pastel baskets or plastic eggs or stuffed baby bunnies - not even at the local Wal-Mart. Apparently, there is no "Conejito de Pascua" (Easter Bunny) in Costa Rica! The whole week leading up to Easter is called "Semana Santa" (Holy Week) and Thursday and Friday are national holidays with all schools, government offices, and businesses closed. Many Ticos head to the beaches. We were happy to stay home, enjoy the quiet, and celebrate the day Gringo-style! (Yes, Mama stocked up on those plastic eggs last month in the U.S.!)

The Easter Bunny took a long Southern detour to reach Sophie's house.

The Bunny brought a magnetic fishing game!

The highlight for Sophie (well, besides the chocolate) was the "Easter hunk" - a.k.a Easter egg hunt.

Kickin' it at the Embassy Easter party

Oooohhh, it's a box of goodies from Papa and Grandma Meer!

Look - a candy-filled egg from Nana! Score!

I'm sure all that sugar put her right to sleep that evening!!! Did Sophie get to the bunnies before Amy ate their ears?
