Tico Tales - When Grammy and Grandpa Tony Came to Costa Rica

Occasional Tales from our Life in Costa Rica

We were lucky to have a visit from Grammy and Grandpa Tony at the beginning of December. We squeezed a lot of fun into 9 days. Sophie loved when her grandparents came to her school, and we all had fun decorating our Christmas tree and attending the embassy Christmas party. We visited La Paz Waterfall Garden and also headed to the central Pacific coast for a couple of days of fun in the sun. We were lucky to spot lots of wild animals - crocodiles, iguanas, scarlet macaws, a toucan, tons of parrots, and two whited-nosed coatis!

Ah, the first of many casados (typical Costa Rican meals consisting of rice, black beans, plantains, salad, and some kind of meat)

We went to the Saturday morning farmer's market (feria) in central Escazu to look at the beautiful and exotic produce. We bought fresh Christmas wreaths, corn bread and a snow cone and sampled agua pipa straight from the shell.

Grammy took a break outside a traditional blue and white adobe house in Escazu.

We had lunch downtown and did some souvenir shopping and people watching. Grammy and Sophie fed the pigeons outside the National Theater.

Grammy and Sophie made an ornament at the embassy Christmas party.

At La Paz Waterfall Garden, we saw three huge waterfalls (and laid waste to two huge buffets)

Sophie got to hold a stick with a bird on it!

We spotted a bollero and his oxen pulling an empty coffee cart down the road and pulled over for a quick photo.

We headed to Los Suenos at Playa Herradura to play in the pool and see the Pacific coast.

Grandpa Tony enjoyed relaxing poolside.

Grammy showed her (ultra) competitive spirit during backyard bocce (not to mention several games of Yahtzee, Scrabble, and Hearts).

Grammy and Sophie baked chocolate chip cookies before decorating the Christmas tree.

Hi Amy- Your mom is beautiful just like you. It was fun to see the pics and recognize things before reading the captions. We can't wait to come visit again. I was hoping for another waterfall trip or Los Suenos but you guys might be burned out! You'll have to find us something else to see.

What wonderful pictures and memories. It looks like you managed to do alot while grandma and grandpa were visiting. It's hard to believe that Sophie will be three years old in a few days. We'll see you soon.Love you, Aunt Laurie
