Tico Tales - Oh, Christmas Tree!
Occasional Tales from our Life in Costa Rica
It's so exciting. We're going to have a Christmas tree this year! For the first time in three years. In 2004 Amy made do with some poinsettias while alone in DC awaiting Sophie's arrival. Then in 2005 the first trees went on sale in Tbilisi on December 24 (because Georgians celebrate the orthodox Christmas on Jan. 7) and by then we'd already resigned ourselves to not having a tree. And last year we moved out of a hotel and into our house on December 22 and were more focused on locating toilet paper and milk than a tree. But this year is different. We are together and settled and trees are for sale everywhere. Since this is our first tree in a while, we decided not to just buy it at Hipermas (the name of Wal-Mart in Costa Rica) or from some guy on the side of the road. Instead, we made a trip to a Christmas tree farm to pick out the perfect tree. Now it's reserved and we'll return soon to take it home. A Christmas tree! Yay!

Christmas tree farm - green but maybe not very environmentally friendly . . .

it looks like they cleared a lot of forest to grow Christmas trees

Sophie thinks looking for a tree is fun!

He's tagging our tree!

Jason forgot to cover up and the bugs ate him alive. Insect repellent - a must for Christmas tree shopping in Central America!
