Tico Tales - Escape From the Rain
Occasional tales from our life in Costa Rica
The rainy season started in May and hasn't let up since. (In fact, it's just building to its big October/November climax.) We were desperate to escape the rain and so last weekend we headed to the Central Pacific coast. It's risky making hotel reservations at the beach this time of year (it rains there, too), but we found exactly what we were looking for: warm sunshine and blue skies.

Every evening the rush hour DJ on Radio Dos says, "Just another day in paradise." We always find this ironic because he almost always immediately afterword launches into dismal weather and traffic reports. But then this weekend we visited this beach at Manuel Antonio National Park and were reminded that parts of Costa Rica really are pretty darn close to paradise. Just look at that beach! And because it's low season, we practically had it all to ourselves.

But you do have to beware the monkeys. Manuel Antonio is full of them, and many seem to suffer from a primate form of kleptomania. And the raccoons are even worse. We kept a close watch on our securely zipped bags.

We stopped at this restaurant on the way back to our hotel. Sophie enjoyed the lovely view while eating her favorite restaurant meal: rice and beans.
